Consecutive Interpreting Services
At InterpreterDC, we specialize in providing highly precise and professional consecutive interpreting services for sensitive, interactive, and small-group settings. This mode of interpretation is ideal when one party speaks, pauses, and the interpreter then conveys the message to the other party, ensuring accuracy, fidelity, and direct engagement. Our expertise covers a wide range of specialized assignments, with a deep focus on the legal, investigative, medical, and diplomatic fields. We ensure your communication is handled with the utmost confidentiality and professionalism.
When is Consecutive Interpreting Required?
Consecutive interpreting is the essential choice for settings that require a meticulous, word-for-word account and direct back-and-forth dialogue:
Legal & Judicial Proceedings:
Depositions, Witness Interviews, and Arbitrations: Critical for pre-trial discovery and out-of-court dispute resolution.
Subpoena and Subpoena duces tecum: Interpreting during the serving of these legal orders or for subsequent testimony.
Title Cases and Real Estate Closings: Facilitating a clear understanding of complex legal documents related to property ownership and transfers.
Attorney-Client Meetings: Maintaining privilege and clarity during sensitive consultations.
Immigration Interviews: Such as USCIS Adjustment of Status and other official government appointments.
Internal & Workplace Investigations:
Interviews with Employees or University Personnel: Comprehensive interpreting for internal investigations to determine misconduct, including discrimination, abuse of authority, harassment, or other ethical violations.
Medical & Insurance:
Independent Medical Examinations (IMEs) and Clinical Consultations: Ensuring patient safety and diagnostic accuracy.
Worker’s Compensation and Disability Claims: Facilitating interviews and examinations related to claims.
Business & Diplomacy:
Confidential High-Level Meetings: Private negotiations, one-on-one executive discussions, and diplomatic dialogues (e.g., between Ministers or Heads of State).
Technical Appointments and Training Sessions: Small-group workshops and Q&A sessions where direct interaction is key.
Based on the professional standards of the International Association of Conference Interpreters (AIIC), for a full-day assignment, a team of at least two interpreters is typically required for consecutive interpreting. The AIIC's guidelines are based on maintaining the highest quality and protecting the interpreter's health, as interpreting is cognitively demanding. Here are the key points from the AIIC's professional standards for consecutive interpreting:
For assignments involving two languages (interpreting in both directions), the minimum number of interpreters recommended is two.
While a single interpreter may be sufficient for shorter sessions or under exceptional circumstances, for a full-day assignment, two interpreters are generally needed to ensure sustained accuracy and maintain stamina.
The normal duration of an interpreter's working day is limited to two sessions of between 2.5 and 3 hours each (a maximum of approximately 6 hours of work). A full-day assignment exceeding this duration would therefore necessitate a team to allow for breaks and rotation.
Clients are kindly requested to provide all relevant preparation materials at least three business days prior to the start of the assignment.
These materials enable interpreters to study and prepare thoroughly for your project.
If necessary, a confidentiality agreement (NDA) can be signed.
If no materials, presentation decks, or specific information are provided, InterpreterDC cannot guarantee the quality of the rendition.
Interpreters reserve the right to monitor and control their professional image.
This includes the right to charge a recording fee (30%), to request access to the recording, and to be informed of how and when the recording is used, and when its use ceases.
No cancellation fee will apply if the Client cancels the assignment at least 14 days in advance.
Cancellations made with less than 14 days’ notice: 25% of the service fee.
Cancellations made within 7 days prior to the assignment: 50% of the service fee.
Cancellations made within 48 hours prior to the start of the service, as well as missed appointments, no‑shows, suspensions, or cancellations during the service: 100% of the booked service fee.
In cases of force majeure, no cancellation fees will apply, and any deposit may be credited toward future services.
We value your time as much as we value ours. Once a service is confirmed, the interpreter reserves the necessary time for your case, including prior preparation. By booking our services, the Client blocks a slot in our calendar that will no longer be available to other clients.
The request and booking of interpreting services constitute a binding contract.
By authorizing InterpreterDC to provide the services described under “Service Request and Booking” and/or by receiving such services, the Client assumes all payment obligations as well as the commercial and legal responsibilities established or implied in this document.
The Client acknowledges and agrees to these Terms and Conditions set forth herein and acknowledges their legally binding nature.
All services requested by the Client will be provided and must be paid in full, as stipulated in this document.v
